Rescued flamingo in Limón survives against the odds but will remain in human care

Story of the rescued flamingo

An American flamingo rescued in Limón in June 2025 continues to show signs of recovery under the care of the Jaguar Rescue Center, a wildlife rehabilitation center in Costa Rica. The bird was initially found in Valle de la Estrella in very poor condition — weak, underweight, hypothermic, and diagnosed with liver and kidney failure. Despite these challenges, its condition has improved significantly thanks to intensive veterinary care.

Recovery progress

Over the past months, the flamingo has gained weight, shown healthier plumage, and maintained a stable condition, marking a notable improvement from its critical state upon arrival.

Decision on its future

Despite these positive developments, a joint evaluation by the Ministerio de Ambiente y Energía (MINAE), international specialists and the rehab team concluded that the flamingo cannot be returned to the wild.

Key reasons included vision problems, behavior adapted to human interaction, the absence of other flamingo individuals in Costa Rica, and the lack of a suitable ecosystem for its specific dietary and behavioral needs.

Permanent care

As a result, the flamingo will remain in permanent human care at the Jaguar Rescue Center, where it will continue receiving specialized attention to ensure its well-being. This type of long-term care is essential when release to the wild is not a viable option.

Role of rescue and rehabilitation centers

Organizations like the Jaguar Rescue Center play a crucial role in wildlife conservation and rehabilitation. When animals cannot be released due to physical, behavioral, or ecological limitations, these sanctuaries provide safe, lifelong care and help educate the public about the importance of protecting wildlife.
