Road works temporarily paused during Easter Week 2026

Pause on road works during Easter

The measure will take effect from Friday, March 27 — the last working day on the projects — and will extend through Monday, April 6, 2026, when work will resume. The goal is to provide better traffic flow for travel to beaches and tourist destinations, reducing congestion associated with regulated crossings and partial road closures. During this period, machinery and construction crews will not be operating on the affected sections, although existing signage will remain in place.

Routes and projects where work will be suspended

Among the works to be suspended are projects in Hatillos 6 and 8, interventions on the María Aguilar river along Circunvalación, works in Caletas and Tárcoles on National Route 34, and the Barranca–Limonal project on Route 1. Works at the Grecia and San Ramón interchanges will also be paused, as well as interventions in the mountainous section of Route 32 between San José and Limón. At all these points, the aim is to eliminate during Easter Week the alternative routes and traffic regulations that generate bottlenecks.

Safety and recommendations for drivers

Although construction work will be halted, the MOPT stresses that drivers must respect the signage, speed limits, and safety devices that will remain at each work site. The Traffic Police will intensify road controls and recommends planning trips in advance, checking vehicle condition, and avoiding risky maneuvers or driving under the influence of alcohol. Authorities note that traffic will increase particularly toward Guanacaste, the Central Pacific, and the Northern Zone, so drivers are advised to set out early and stay informed about traffic conditions.
