Carlos Morales is the anthropologist for the National Museum of Costa Rica at the Finca 6 archaeological site—one of the country’s most important pre-Columbian locations. He was kind enough to serve as our guide through the archaeological sites. His knowledge of and passion for archaeology and anthropology are undeniable; his passion stems from a documentary about Pompeii that he watched with his grandfather.
The southern region is home to numerous sites once inhabited by the Diquís (or Térraba) culture. The Diquís were master artisans and goldsmiths; their stone spheres—whose method of creation remains a mystery—are among their most iconic works. These spheres were part of residential centers and complexes, typically marking the homes of high-ranking tribal members.
