National Route 32, one of the main highways connecting Costa Rica’s Central Valley with the province of Limón, will experience intermittent closures in the coming months due to lighting installation works along different sections of the road. These interventions are part of efforts to improve road safety and visibility on this strategic route for the transport of people and goods.

According to information released by the National Roads Council (CONAVI), the closures will be temporary while crews carry out the work required to install the new lighting systems. These interventions could extend until June, depending on the progress of the works and weather conditions.

Improving road safety on a key route

Route 32 is a fundamental corridor for national mobility, as it connects the Greater Metropolitan Area with Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast and the country’s main port located in Limón. A significant portion of cargo transport heading to the port terminals travels along this highway.

According to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT), the installation of lighting systems aims to improve nighttime visibility and reduce the risk of accidents in areas with constant traffic.

Authorities have indicated that these improvements are part of a broader set of interventions aimed at strengthening road safety and infrastructure along strategic national corridors.

Temporary closures and recommendations for drivers

During the execution of the works, intermittent closures will be implemented on specific sections of the road while technical teams install the lighting equipment.

Authorities recommend that drivers plan their trips in advance, especially those traveling toward the province of Limón or using this route for commercial and tourism-related activities.

The National Roads Council has also indicated that traffic control and signage measures will be implemented to reduce the impact of the works on vehicle circulation.

Road infrastructure and regional development

The modernization of Route 32 is considered a priority within Costa Rica’s national road network due to its economic and logistical importance. This highway facilitates access to the Caribbean region, a key area for foreign trade, tourism, and the transport of agricultural products.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has indicated that improvements in road infrastructure help strengthen the country’s connectivity and improve mobility conditions for residents, tourists, and transport operators.

The lighting works are part of a series of projects aimed at modernizing the route and improving safety for all road users.
