Every country needs a farmers’ market. In Costa Rica, the oldest and perhaps the largest (that I know of) is the one in Zapote. For longer than I’ve been alive, the feria has been there every Sunday, bringing together over a hundred vendors and farmers.
Many of the people and faces have become familiar. Generations of buyers and sellers have been brought and introduced to each other, watching each other grow up and grow old one Sunday at a time.
Jokes among people, comments about the outcome of soccer matches, and quick updates on health and family happen every Sunday from 5 in the morning to 2 in the afternoon, in a very jovial atmosphere.
I love how colorful the feria is, especially the arrangement of fruits and vegetables on the stands, and the people you expect to see every Sunday to share brief moments and a warm “Pura Vida.
