Costa Rica’s main air gateway, the Juan Santamaría International Airport (AIJS), is undergoing a full transformation. The expansion works on its main terminal have reached a solid 58% progress milestone, marking a key step in the roadmap aimed at strengthening the country’s logistical and tourism competitiveness.
After breaking ground in March of last year, the project —a strategic investment of $62 million— is currently focused on developing critical areas for the passenger experience. According to Aeris, the terminal’s managing company, travelers will begin using the new facilities starting in May of this year.
What can passengers expect from this new phase? The expansion is not merely about adding square meters, but rather about improving operational efficiency. The project includes a new arrivals area, upgraded restrooms, business centers, and a reinforced baggage inspection system. Additionally, phytosanitary and customs checks are being strengthened to expedite entry procedures without compromising national security.
A Constantly Evolving Airport
But the main terminal is just one piece of the puzzle. The airport’s Master Plan includes several other work fronts underway:
• Remote apron: 10% progress with completion expected in December.
• Domestic Terminal: Internal flights will also benefit from a renovated space by April 2027.
• Public Parking: A long-awaited project scheduled for inauguration in May 2027.
With this progress, Juan Santamaría aims not only to handle a larger volume of passengers, but also to bolster its standing as a cutting-edge terminal in Central America, ready to meet the growing demands of an increasingly connected world.
