Monteverde Biological Reserve Wins Latin American Gold for Regenerative Tourism

Recognition at an international event

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve, one of Costa Rica’s most emblematic natural areas, received First Place in the category of Best Regenerative Tourism Initiatives at the World Travel Market Latin America 2026, held in São Paulo, Brazil, on April 15, 2026. This recognition highlights the responsible and sustainable management model developed by the reserve, positioning it as a regional benchmark for tourism practices that not only protect nature but also generate socio-economic benefits for local communities.

A conservation-driven sustainability approach

Since its creation, the reserve has implemented a management model centered on environmental conservation, where each visit is seen as an opportunity to discover the biodiversity of the cloud forest while encouraging ecosystem protection. The area is home to more than 2,500 plant species, around 100 mammal species, and approximately 400 bird species, among many other forms of life, making Monteverde a site of global ecological importance.

The reserve is managed by the Centro Científico Tropical, a Costa Rican non-profit organization focused on research, environmental education, and conservation. Representatives of the organization emphasized that the award recognizes the ongoing work of its team in strengthening a model that combines environmental protection with sustainable local development.

What is regenerative tourism?

Regenerative tourism goes beyond traditional sustainable tourism. It does not only seek to reduce negative impacts but aims to restore and improve ecosystems while strengthening the relationship between nature and human communities. In Monteverde, this is reflected in programs that integrate environmental education, scientific research, economic opportunities for local residents, and meaningful learning experiences for visitors, contributing to the cloud forest’s resilience in the face of climate change.

Monteverde’s relevance in ecotourism

The Monteverde reserve is considered one of the most biodiverse and ecologically valuable regions in the world. Covering approximately 10,500 hectares of cloud forest, it forms part of a key biological corridor alongside other protected areas. Each year, tens of thousands of visitors come to the reserve for birdwatching, interpretive hiking, and immersive nature experiences.

By consolidating its role as an example of regenerative tourism, Monteverde reinforces Costa Rica’s international image as a leading destination for nature-based and sustainable travel, demonstrating how ecosystem protection can go hand in hand with economic and educational opportunities for surrounding communities.
