UCR and MICITT sign agreement to create a technological laboratory for learning and entrepreneurship

A new space for innovation in Guanacaste

The University of Costa Rica (UCR) and the Ministry of Science, Innovation, Technology and Telecommunications (MICITT) have signed an agreement to create a technological laboratory focused on learning, innovation, and entrepreneurship at the Santa Cruz Campus, in the province of Guanacaste. This new space aims to serve as a hub for technological and creative development for students, entrepreneurs, and the regional community, offering tools and environments to experiment, prototype, and strengthen technical and business skills.

The initial investment in infrastructure and equipment for the laboratory exceeds 28 million Costa Rican colones, reflecting the joint commitment of UCR and the Costa Rican government to foster local capacities in science and technology.

What the technological laboratory will offer

The new laboratory is designed to provide an environment equipped with technology and resources that allow users to:

  • Carry out product prototyping, digital design, and technological experimentation
  • Participate in technical and entrepreneurial skills workshops
  • Develop applied projects integrating innovation and entrepreneurship
  • Access collaborative spaces with peers, professors, and experts

These types of spaces are part of a broader initiative of Community Innovation Laboratories (LINC) promoted by MICITT, which aim to bring technology, creativity, and hands-on learning closer to communities across the country, fostering a culture of innovation with social impact.

Importance for regional development

The opening of this laboratory in Santa Cruz represents a significant opportunity to boost local development by facilitating access to technological tools that were traditionally concentrated in large urban centers. This can particularly benefit municipalities in Guanacaste and rural areas seeking to integrate into the knowledge economy and strengthen their capacities in technological entrepreneurship and innovation.

Moreover, by encouraging experimentation, inter-institutional collaboration, and knowledge transfer, this laboratory helps close gaps in access to technology and advanced training, which can positively impact competitiveness and the creation of new business initiatives in the region.

Institutional support and strategic framework

MICITT, as the governing body of public policies in science, innovation, and technology in Costa Rica, has promoted the creation and expansion of spaces such as LINC in various regions of the country to strengthen local capacities for innovation management.

UCR, for its part, contributes its academic expertise and research capacity to ensure that the technological laboratory operates as a bridge between higher education, applied innovation, and the real needs of productive sectors and entrepreneurs.
