Monteverde Earns Global Recognition for Excellence in Conservation

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve has reached a new milestone for conservation in Costa Rica by becoming the country’s first protected area to be included on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Green List. This international recognition highlights protected areas that demonstrate outstanding management and measurable success in conserving biodiversity.

More than just an award, this certification reflects decades of scientific research, sustainable management, and collaboration with local communities to protect one of Central America’s most iconic ecosystems.

What is the IUCN Green List?

The IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas is a global standard that recognizes protected areas achieving the highest levels of governance, planning, effective management, and conservation outcomes.

Unlike many conservation recognitions, the Green List evaluates not only the existence of a protected area but also how effectively it is managed and the tangible benefits it delivers for biodiversity and local communities.

To be included, each site must undergo a rigorous evaluation process based on internationally recognized criteria and demonstrate continuous improvement in its management practices.

A Cloud Forest of Global Importance

Established in 1972 and managed by the Tropical Science Center (Centro Científico Tropical – CCT), the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve protects approximately 4,125 hectares of cloud forest in the Tilarán Mountain Range, one of Costa Rica’s richest biodiversity hotspots.

Its forests are home to thousands of species of plants, birds, mammals, amphibians, and insects, many of which are endemic or particularly vulnerable to environmental change. Thanks to its unique climate and constant moisture generated by cloud cover, the reserve serves as one of the world’s most valuable natural laboratories for biodiversity research and climate change monitoring.

For more than five decades, Monteverde has successfully combined habitat protection with scientific research, environmental education, and sustainable ecotourism, becoming an international benchmark for conservation.

By joining the Green List, Monteverde becomes not only Costa Rica’s first protected area to receive this distinction but also one of the first privately managed reserves worldwide to achieve this level of international recognition.

This achievement demonstrates that privately managed conservation initiatives can meet the same rigorous standards as national parks when supported by science-based management, community engagement, and long-term conservation objectives.

The IUCN also emphasizes that Green List status is not permanent. Certified sites undergo regular reassessments to ensure they continue meeting the required standards and delivering positive conservation outcomes.
