Costa Rica Strengthens Marine Conservation with Real-Time Monitoring Technology

Technological innovation serving environmental protection

Costa Rica is advancing the modernization of its environmental management by incorporating new technological tools to protect its marine ecosystems. The Ministerio de Ambiente y Energía, through the Sistema Nacional de Áreas de Conservación, has strengthened its capabilities in the Cocos Marine Conservation Area with the implementation of the EarthRanger platform.

This initiative aims to improve management, monitoring, and decision-making in one of the country’s most strategic marine areas, recognized globally for its biodiversity and ecological importance.

EarthRanger: a data-driven decision-making platform

The EarthRanger platform integrates data from multiple sources into a single system, providing a comprehensive, real-time view of ecosystem conditions.

Its key features include wildlife tracking, monitoring of assets such as vessels and vehicles, integration of historical and real-time data, and automatic alerts for critical events.

It also includes geospatial visualization tools and mobile applications that allow rangers to report information directly from the field, improving response times and operational efficiency.

Institutional and international cooperation

The implementation of this technology is part of a collaborative effort between public institutions and international organizations. The project is supported by initiatives such as the Fondo Azul Costa Rica and organizations like WildAid.

Additionally, EarthRanger was developed with support from the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, reinforcing its innovative nature and global application in conservation contexts.

This collaboration reflects a growing trend toward international partnerships in marine ecosystem protection.

A key area for global biodiversity

The Cocos Marine Conservation Area, managed by the Sistema Nacional de Áreas de Conservación, is one of the most important marine conservation zones in the Eastern Tropical Pacific.

It includes ecosystems of high ecological value such as Isla del Coco National Park, which hosts a remarkable diversity of species including sharks, manta rays, sea turtles, and numerous endemic species.

Costa Rica has also made international commitments to expand marine protection, increasing the importance of technological tools that enable more effective management.

Technology as a cornerstone of modern conservation

The adoption of platforms like EarthRanger represents a shift in how protected areas are managed. According to authorities from the Ministerio de Ambiente y Energía, such tools help optimize human and financial resources, improve surveillance, and strengthen evidence-based decision-making.

In a context where marine ecosystems face increasing pressure from illegal fishing, climate change, and pollution, technology plays a crucial role in ensuring long-term sustainability.

Costa Rica, internationally recognized for its environmental leadership, continues to reinforce its commitment to innovation as a tool for conservation.
