Costa Rica begins construction of the National Gymnastics Center in Heredia

The construction of the National Gymnastics Center recently began in Heredia, with the objective of strengthening the country’s sports infrastructure and offering specialized facilities for the development of gymnastics in all its disciplines. The project is located on the west side of the Hospital de Heredia and is part of a broader initiative to promote national sport.

The project represents a significant step for Costa Rican athletes, as it will include a training gym designed with technical specifications provided by the Instituto Costarricense del Deporte y la Recreación (Icoder), the entity responsible for coordinating the development of federated sports in Costa Rica.

Investment and funding

The construction of the center will be financed with combined resources from the Municipalidad de Heredia, which will contribute ₡600 million, and Icoder, which will contribute ₡500 million, reflecting a joint effort between local and national institutions to promote sport.

Benefits for athletes and the community

The new National Gymnastics Center will directly benefit around 2,500 athletes from various disciplines such as rhythmic, artistic, aerobic gymnastics, parkour, trampoline, and gymnastics for all, allowing them to train and compete in facilities suited to their needs. In addition, an indirect impact is expected for approximately 5,000 people, including families, coaches, and members of affiliated sports associations.

This type of infrastructure also supports the growth of national and regional sporting events, increasing participation and experience opportunities for Costa Rican athletes.

Phases and expansion of the project

The first phase of the project includes the construction of the main gym, which is expected to be completed in approximately 11 months. To facilitate future expansions, the Municipality of Heredia is already in the process of acquiring additional land. The goal is to ensure sufficient space for complementary infrastructure, such as swimming facilities and parking areas for visitors.

The facility will be managed by the Federación Deportiva de Gimnasia y Afines de Costa Rica, which will establish a management model focused on the center’s self-sustainability and self-management once operational.

Importance for national sports development

The construction of this specialized center represents an important advance for sport in Costa Rica, by providing a space that allows athletes to train in optimal conditions and enabling national sports organizations to have a venue for training sessions, competitions, and educational activities that previously had to be held in non-specialized facilities.
