Justice orders restoration of ecosystem damaged by livestock invasion in Coronado

A criminal court, at the request of the Agrarian Environmental Prosecutor’s Office, has issued a precautionary measure of restitution of conditions to compel the repair of environmental damage caused in the protected areas of the Honda stream and the Macho River, in the canton of Coronado.

The judicial ruling arises after an investigation into the alleged invasion of protected zones. It was confirmed that the presence of livestock in these restricted areas led to the removal of native vegetation and a significant accumulation of organic waste, specifically manure and slurry.

During judicial proceedings at the site, authorities verified that direct discharges of untreated water were being released into the water bodies, further worsening the sanitary and ecological situation of the local watershed.

The precautionary measure of “restitution of conditions” means that those responsible are legally obliged to carry out the necessary actions to return the ecosystem to its original state, or at least mitigate the damage through reforestation and the cessation of livestock activity along the margins of the affected rivers.

This ruling strengthens oversight of water protection zones, which are essential for groundwater recharge and the preservation of biodiversity on the outskirts of the Greater Metropolitan Area. The judicial process remains in the investigation stage to determine final responsibilities and ensure that the restoration plan is executed in accordance with environmental technical standards.
