Modernization of Artisanal Fishing in Guanacaste: Delivery of Motors to Coastal Families

Delivery of Motors to Strengthen Local Fishing

A total of 28 families dedicated to artisanal and touristic fishing in different coastal communities of Guanacaste received modern outboard motors as part of an initiative by the Instituto de Desarrollo Rural (Inder).
The delivery took place on April 27, 2026, with an investment of approximately ₡167.4 million, aimed at modernizing boats in areas such as Flamingo and Tamarindo (Santa Cruz), Puerto San Pablo and Puerto Thiel (Nandayure), Puerto Jesús, Puerto Pochote and Sámara (Nicoya), as well as El Jobo and Cuajiniquil (La Cruz).

According to official reports from Inder, the provision of these new outboard motors allows beneficiary families to improve safety at sea, reduce operating costs, and access more distant fishing areas, which can translate into greater income opportunities for the artisanal fishing sector.

Objectives of the Initiative

The project seeks to strengthen the safety, productivity, and sustainability of artisanal and touristic fishing by incorporating equipment with greater fuel efficiency. This not only improves working conditions but also encourages more environmentally responsible practices in marine-coastal activities.

The initiative is carried out with the technical collaboration of the Instituto Costarricense de Pesca y Acuicultura and the Cámara de Pescadores, Armadores y Actividades Afines de Guanacaste, coordinating institutional efforts to improve working conditions in the fishing sector.

Impact on Coastal Communities

With the incorporation of more modern motors, beneficiary families will be able to work more efficiently, expand their range at sea, and reduce dependence on old equipment that often represented a risk or a high financial burden. This represents direct support for the local economy and the livelihoods of coastal communities.

Context of Support for Artisanal Fishing

These types of actions are part of a broader effort by Inder and Incopesca to strengthen the artisanal fishing sector in Costa Rica. Similar projects have been implemented in other regions of the country, such as the delivery of 53 motors with modern technology to families in the Central Pacific, with an investment of more than ₡306 million, also aimed at improving productivity, safety, and sustainability in the fishing sector.

In addition, initiatives jointly developed by the Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería, Incopesca, and the Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura seek to promote sustainable fishing and the development of aquaculture along the coasts of Costa Rica, with plans focused on improving marine resource management and fostering economic opportunities for families who depend on these activities.
