Temporary measure affects access during the week
Access to the Barva Volcano sector, located within Braulio Carrillo National Park, has been temporarily restricted on several days of the week as part of a road improvement project.
According to official provisions, entry will remain closed from Monday to Saturday during the intervention period, allowing access only on specific days under special conditions.
This measure responds to reconstruction works on the access road leading to the park, a key route for both tourism and conservation in the area.
Works aim to improve safety and accessibility
The interventions are part of a road improvement project led by environmental authorities in coordination with the MINAE and the SINAC.
The works include pavement reconstruction and technical processes aimed at ensuring greater durability and safety of the access route.
During this period, vehicular traffic is restricted, requiring visitors to adjust how they access the protected area.
Pedestrian access and visitor recommendations
Despite the restrictions, access to Barva Volcano is not completely closed.
Authorities have indicated that visitors may enter on foot from the community of Sacramento in the canton of Barva, covering approximately four kilometers to reach the park entrance.
Due to these conditions, visitors are advised to:
- Plan visits in advance
- Check official schedules and announcements
- Use appropriate hiking footwear
- Carry water, food, and suitable mountain clothing
These measures aim to ensure a safe experience during the construction period.
A key destination within the national park system
Barva Volcano is one of the main attractions within Braulio Carrillo National Park, one of the largest and most biodiverse protected areas in the country.
The park, managed by SINAC, covers approximately 50,000 hectares and protects rainforest and cloud forest ecosystems, as well as important water sources for Costa Rica.
The Barva sector is especially known for its trails, volcanic lagoons, and highland landscapes, making it an important destination for both domestic and international tourism.
Tourism and conservation: a necessary balance
Temporary restrictions highlight the challenge of balancing tourism access with conservation and infrastructure maintenance in protected areas.
Road improvements aim not only to facilitate future access but also to reduce risks associated with deteriorated infrastructure, especially in a region characterized by heavy rainfall and mountainous terrain.
This type of intervention is part of a broader strategy to strengthen sustainable tourism in Costa Rica.
Importance of staying informed
Authorities recommend that visitors stay informed through official channels before planning trips to the park.
Institutions such as SINAC and MINAE regularly publish updates on access conditions, weather status, and temporary measures in protected areas.
Responsible planning is essential to avoid inconvenience and ensure visitor safety.
