Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve joins the IUCN Green List
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve has reached a major conservation milestone by becoming the first protected area in Costa Rica to be included on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas. The recognition also places Monteverde among the world’s first privately managed terrestrial reserves to meet this demanding international conservation standard.
The distinction acknowledges decades of work dedicated to protecting cloud forests, advancing scientific research, promoting environmental education, and encouraging active participation from local communities.
What is the IUCN Green List?
The IUCN Green List is an international certification program that recognizes protected and conserved areas demonstrating effective management, good governance, and measurable conservation outcomes benefiting both biodiversity and local communities.
To earn this certification, protected areas must meet rigorous standards related to:
- Effective biodiversity conservation
- Transparent and inclusive governance
- Long-term management planning
- Benefits for local communities
- Scientific monitoring and continuous improvement
It is considered one of the most prestigious recognitions a protected area can receive worldwide.
More than five decades dedicated to protecting cloud forests
Founded in 1972 and managed by the Tropical Science Center (CCT), the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve protects approximately 4,125 hectares of cloud forest in the Tilarán Mountain Range.
For more than fifty years, it has served as a world-renowned center for scientific research and one of Costa Rica’s premier ecotourism destinations. The reserve also operates long-term biodiversity monitoring and environmental education programs that benefit students, researchers, and visitors from around the world.
A sanctuary for extraordinary biodiversity
Monteverde is internationally recognized as one of Central America’s richest biodiversity hotspots.
Its forests provide habitat for hundreds of species of birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, insects, and thousands of plant species, many of which are endemic or have very limited geographic distributions.
The reserve also protects iconic wildlife such as the resplendent quetzal, numerous orchid species, wild cats, and a remarkable diversity of amphibians adapted to cloud forest ecosystems.
Research, education, and conservation working together
One of the key aspects highlighted by the IUCN is Monteverde’s integrated conservation model.
In addition to protecting the forest, the reserve supports long-term scientific research on biodiversity, climate change, and tropical ecosystem dynamics.
At the same time, it operates environmental education programs for schools throughout the region, helping cultivate a culture of conservation among younger generations.
Recognition that reinforces Costa Rica’s environmental leadership
Monteverde’s inclusion on the Green List is an international acknowledgment of Costa Rica’s conservation model, which combines ecosystem protection, scientific research, and community participation.
The achievement also strengthens the country’s reputation as one of the world’s leading destinations for sustainable tourism and nature conservation, demonstrating that environmental protection and economic development can successfully coexist.
A model for protected areas worldwide
Monteverde’s certification provides an inspiring example for both public and private protected areas seeking to strengthen their management systems and achieve internationally recognized conservation standards.
Its experience demonstrates that combining science, education, community engagement, and effective conservation produces lasting benefits for both biodiversity and local communities.
Another important step for global conservation
The inclusion of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve on the IUCN Green List recognizes more than five decades of conservation work while highlighting the importance of protecting cloud forests, one of the planet’s most valuable and fragile ecosystems.
Beyond benefiting Monteverde itself, this international recognition further reinforces Costa Rica’s long-standing commitment to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.
