When Beaches Turn into Symphony: Costa Rica’s National Symphony Orchestra Brings Music Closer to the People in 2026

Table of Contents

Costa Rica continues to reaffirm that its cultural identity goes far beyond its natural landscapes. In 2026, the Benemérita Costa Rican National Symphony Orchestra (OSNCR) will present an official season that brings together music, territory, and inclusion, drawing inspiration from some of the country’s most iconic beaches while firmly committing to democratic access to culture.

According to information released by the Ministry of Culture and Youth (MCJ), the new Official Season not only proposes an artistic narrative rooted in Costa Rican identity, but also introduces a historic reduction in ticket prices, allowing a broader audience to experience symphonic music.

A season that connects music and landscape

The 2026 Official Season will take place between February and November at the National Theatre of Costa Rica and will feature 12 concerts, each inspired by a representative beach from either the Caribbean or the Pacific coast.

Among the destinations lending their names to the programs are Cahuita, Manzanillo, Punta Uva, Gandoca, Tamarindo, Sámara, Nosara, Junquillal, Manuel Antonio, Dominical, Santa Teresa, and Pavones. The concept seeks to reflect the country’s geographical and cultural diversity, translating these landscapes into musical experiences.

The Ministry of Culture and Youth emphasized that this season aims to strengthen the link between symphonic music and the Costa Rican collective imagination, blending art and territory into a single cultural expression.

Access to culture at the core

One of the most significant changes in this season is a reduction of more than 50% in ticket prices, a measure designed to expand public access to National Symphony Orchestra concerts.

Ticket prices for the 2026 Official Season range from ₡2,220 colones for gallery seating to ₡10,000 colones for orchestra seating, with a discount structure that includes:

  • 30% discount for students and senior citizens
  • 50% discount for beneficiaries of the Brete program
  • Free admission for individuals registered with IMAS

For the Ministry of Culture and Youth, these measures are part of a broader strategy to democratize culture, ensuring that economic barriers do not limit access to symphonic music.

National and international talent on stage

The 2026 Official Season will be the second under the principal direction of Maestro Andrés Salado, and will feature renowned national and international guest soloists and conductors.

Invited artists include Gile Bae, Pacho Flores, Leia Zhu, Stathis Karapanos, and Salvador Barberá, alongside Costa Rican musicians. National talent will also take center stage, with programs dedicated to Costa Rican composers, including Benjamín Gutiérrez.

The National Symphonic Choir will participate in three large-scale concerts, performing major works such as Mozart’s Requiem and Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection”.

Beyond the National Theatre

The Official Season is part of a broader annual program. According to official data, in 2026 the OSNCR will present a total of 83 concerts across the country, nearly half of them free of charge.

These performances will reach communities, educational institutions, universities, churches, and cultural venues in all seven provinces, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to decentralizing access to music and fostering new audiences.

Culture as a social investment

Beyond its artistic value, this season reflects a long-term vision: culture as a social investment and a tool for cohesion. By reducing economic barriers and expanding its territorial presence, the National Symphony Orchestra strengthens its role as one of Costa Rica’s most important cultural institutions.

The year 2026 will not only be about concerts, but about inviting more people to reconnect with music, territory, and Costa Rican identity—proving that culture can serve as a bridge between artistic excellence and everyday life.

At People of Costa Rica, we celebrate initiatives that bring art closer to the people and highlight national talent as a fundamental pillar of the country’s cultural development.
