San José, May 9, 2025—The National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica, together with the National Symphony Choir, will premiere “Song of Peace for the Ocean,” winner of the national music composition contest launched as part of the Government of Costa Rica’s commitment to the culture of peace and the protection of the marine environment.
The piece, composed by Costa Rican musician Andrés Soto Marín, winner of the contest, is a song that emerges from Costa Rica to the world, as a symbol of hope, awareness, and action for life in the oceans.
The premiere will take place on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at 7:30 p.m., at the Teatro Popular Melico Salazar, under the guest direction of Eddie Mora. A free show open to the public.
“The countries of Costa Rica and France are coordinating the World Ocean Summit in Nice, France, for June 2025. Since we took office at the Ministry of Culture and Youth, we wanted to contribute from our sector to this global celebration, so the summit will feature a ‘Song of Peace for the Ocean,’ a piece composed by Elena Zúñiga, with music by Andrés Soto and conducted by Eddie Mora—a guarantee of quality. Moreover, it will be performed by the National Symphony Orchestra and the National Symphony Choir. This is important because it allows us to share, from the cultural sector, Costa Rica’s expectations for this summit,” stated Jorge Rodríguez Vives, Minister of Culture and Youth.
The musical event will also include performances of “Vals Leda” by Julio Fonseca and “Orpheus in the Underworld.” Additionally, there will be an excerpt from the show “Sanctuary: A Journey to the Depths of the Ocean,” featuring artists from the National Dance Company and the Directorate of Bands. This show was presented at the Nice Carnival, France, in February 2025.
