Road Closure and Upgrades Between Escazú and Alajuelita: What Changes and Why It Matters

National Secondary Route 177, which connects downtown Escazú with Alajuelita, will be closed to traffic for approximately eight months starting May 11, 2026, as part of a comprehensive road improvement project. The closure affects a roughly one-kilometer stretch between the Montescazú shopping center and the entrance to the Nuevo Horizonte community.

The primary goal of this intervention is to modernize an essential roadway in the Greater Metropolitan Area that previously faced limitations in safety and traffic capacity.

Main Components of the Roadworks

The project includes several structural upgrades, such as:

  • Construction of new sidewalks and curbs to enhance pedestrian safety
  • Installation of a modern stormwater drainage system to reduce flooding risks
  • Rehabilitation of the existing road surface to improve durability
  • Expansion of the bridge over the Agres River to two lanes to improve vehicle flow and reduce congestion

The estimated total investment for the project is ₡1.9 billion colones, funded by the Municipality of Escazú with the support of national institutions.

Institutional Coordination Behind the Project

Route 177 is part of Costa Rica’s national road network, managed by the Consejo Nacional de Vialidad (CONAVI) under the supervision of the Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT). These agencies are responsible for planning, constructing, and maintaining the country’s road infrastructure.

The Instituto Costarricense de Acueductos y Alcantarillados (AyA) is also involved due to the stormwater drainage and utility infrastructure work associated with the project.

Traffic Impact and Recommendations

During the closure period, regular vehicle traffic will not be permitted, with controlled access only for local residents. Authorities recommend:

  • Planning trips in advance and identifying alternate routes
  • Allowing extra travel time due to detours
  • Following official signage and updates from relevant institutions

These improvements aim to deliver a safer, more durable, and higher-capacity roadway for this important link between key cantons in the national road network.
