Innovative Solution to Clean the Pirro River in Heredia

Low-cost, high-impact pilot project

In the city of Heredia, a pilot initiative is being implemented to clean the Pirro River through an innovative, low-cost solution designed to reduce pollution and raise environmental awareness within the community. The project consists of a floating barrier made from 52 recycled plastic containers and native vegetation, placed diagonally across the river to capture plastics and solid waste before they continue downstream.

This structure, located on the southern side of the Universidad Nacional, was developed with the participation of university students and represents both a mechanical and biological approach to addressing river pollution.

Natural components and ecological approach

In addition to the floating barrier, the project includes “regenerative islands” made of native vegetation blocks, such as foxtail-type plants, which help filter pollutants through biological absorption via their roots. These plants not only help retain waste but also contribute to the ecological recovery of the river environment.

Student participation in monitoring the river adds a strong educational and community dimension to the initiative, promoting environmental awareness and sustainability skills among younger generations.

Community perception and environmental goals

Local residents have expressed support for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of addressing pollution in local rivers, which have historically suffered from the accumulation of waste. Beyond cleaning the river, the project seeks to involve the community in environmental stewardship and promote solutions that could be replicated in other watersheds.

This type of project aligns with global practices focused on intercepting plastic waste in rivers, a strategy increasingly promoted worldwide to reduce the environmental impact of debris before it reaches the ocean.
