Costa Rica Releases the Penultimate ₡25 Collectible Coin Honoring Arenal Volcano

A numismatic piece celebrating one of the country’s natural icons

The Banco Central de Costa Rica (BCCR) announced the release of the penultimate ₡25 collectible coin from the series “Sitios Emblemáticos de Nuestras Provincias,” designed in tribute to Volcán Arenal, located in La Fortuna de San Carlos, Alajuela province. Sales of this piece will begin on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, through public and private financial institutions across the country, which will determine their specific points of sale.

This issue is part of the new monetary cone that the BCCR has been implementing, highlighting representative landmarks from each of the country’s seven provinces. It aims to promote both Costa Rican numismatic culture and the appreciation of the nation’s natural and cultural heritage.

Features of the collectible coin

The coin presents the following characteristics:

• The reverse side displays the imposing profile of Arenal Volcano along with the inscriptions “Provincia de Alajuela,” “Volcán Arenal,” and the year “2023.”
• The obverse side includes the inscriptions “República de Costa Rica” and “Banco Central de Costa Rica,” as well as raised bars that allow tactile identification.
• The coin is sold in two presentations: acrylic case and display box, both priced at ₡8,500 per unit, regardless of the presentation.
• Sales are limited to a maximum of two coins per person, regardless of the format purchased.

The design stands out not only for its aesthetic value but also for its cultural and tourism significance, as Arenal Volcano is one of Costa Rica’s most visited destinations, internationally recognized for its iconic conical shape and surrounding natural environment.

Gradual circulation of the regular coin

In addition to the collectible version, the Central Bank indicated that a regular circulation version of the ₡25 coin will also be issued. This version, without color and intended for everyday transactions, will be distributed gradually through the national financial system.

The introduction of these coins is part of a broader renewal of Costa Rica’s monetary cone, which seeks to incorporate representative national symbols into circulating currency while also offering collectors and the general public the opportunity to acquire limited commemorative editions.
