Costa Rican authorities announced the cancellation of the previously planned three-week closure of the bridge located on National Route 243 in the La Palma sector. The decision was made following a technical review that allowed authorities to adjust the work schedule and avoid a prolonged interruption of traffic on this road.
Route 243 connects several communities in the southern region of the country, particularly areas near the canton of Pérez Zeledón. For this reason, keeping the route operational is essential for residents, producers, and transporters who rely on the road for daily mobility.
Technical review allowed modification of the work plan
According to information released by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) and the National Roadway Council (CONAVI), a full bridge closure had initially been considered to facilitate maintenance work and structural improvements.
However, after an additional evaluation of the bridge’s condition and available technical alternatives, authorities determined that the work can be carried out without completely suspending traffic for an extended period.
This adjustment aims to reduce the impact that a multi-week closure could have had on communities that depend on this route for economic activities, agricultural transport, and daily travel.
Strategic importance of Route 243 for local communities
National Route 243 plays a key role in regional connectivity in southern Costa Rica by facilitating access between rural districts and urban centers.
According to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, secondary roads like this one are essential for local transportation, access to services, and the daily mobility of workers and students traveling between communities.
Keeping traffic flowing across the La Palma bridge will help maintain transportation continuity while authorities coordinate the necessary infrastructure work.
Road infrastructure and preventive maintenance
The planned interventions are part of broader institutional efforts to maintain and improve the national road network. Bridge and road maintenance remains a priority within the country’s infrastructure system, particularly in regions where climate conditions and constant traffic can affect structural durability.
The National Roadway Council has indicated in various reports that periodic bridge evaluations help identify preventive maintenance needs and allow authorities to plan infrastructure improvements that reduce risks for road users.
Authorities stated they will continue monitoring the bridge’s condition and coordinating the necessary work to ensure its safe operation.
