Temporary Exhibition “Loyalty” Opens in Alajuela

The Juan Santamaría Historical and Cultural Museum (MHCJS) inaugurates the temporary exhibition “Loyalty” this Thursday, March 20, 2025, at 5 p.m., at the MHCJS in Alajuela. The exhibition is a posthumous tribute to the renowned Costa Rican visual artist Fernando Calvo Sánchez (1951-2025).

During the opening ceremony, starting at 7 p.m., the National Band of Alajuela will give a free concert in commemoration of the 159th anniversary of the Battle of Santa Rosa.

Fernando Calvo Sánchez left an indelible legacy in Costa Rican visual arts. “Loyalty” celebrates the life and work of one of the most prominent sculptors in the national plastic arts scene. Throughout his career, Calvo sought to convey human emotions through his works, emphasizing the importance of art as a means to preserve and communicate historical memory and national identities.

“Loyalty” features nearly 50 works, including sculptures, engravings, watercolors, and acrylic paintings. It will be open to the public until June 29, 2025, from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the MHCJS. Admission is free and open to everyone.

“My Son Only Walks a Little Slower” at La Aduana Theater

Starting this Friday, March 21, the Teatro de la Aduana presents the play “My Son Only Walks a Little Slower.” This production returns, offering the Costa Rican audience another chance to experience this moving story.

Directed by Gladys Alzate and performed by the GarúaTeatro company, this piece by Croatian playwright Ivor Martinić invites audiences on a deeply emotional and poignant journey.

The production features a cast of experienced actors alongside emerging talents, creating an intergenerational dialogue that brings unique richness to the performance. The cast includes Carlos Alvarado, Vicky Montero, Karen Mora, José Elizondo, Natalia Regidor, Winston Washington, Karla Barquero, Ilse Faith, Julián Valverde, and Manfred Ramírez.

Performances will be held from March 21 to 30, on Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m., and Sundays at 5 p.m., at Teatro de La Aduana. Enjoy a Selection of Films and a Performance by the National Dance Company

The Ministry of Culture and Youth offers a weekend full of cinema with the “Territories: Quebec” film cycle from the “Preámbulo” program of the Film Center, along with three special screenings as part of the “Amón Cultura 2025” program, which will also feature a performance by the National Dance Company.

The “Territories: Quebec” cycle will begin this Thursday, March 20, at 7 p.m., with the fiction film “Eviction,” directed by Mathilde Capone. On Friday, March 21, at 7 p.m., “Hotel Silence,” a fiction film directed by Léa Pool, will be screened. On Saturday, March 22, there will be a double screening: at 5 p.m., “Festín Boreal” by Robert Morin, and at 7 p.m., “Ababouiné” by André Forcie.

Amón Cultural. “Preámbulo” will participate in “Amón Cultural” on Saturday, March 22, with the presentation of three documentaries and short films. The first screening will be at 3 p.m. with the Costa Rican documentary “Mujeres del Manglar” by Astrid Peraza; at 3:30 p.m., the Costa Rican fiction film “Partly Cloudy with a Chance of Storm,” directed by Nicole Villalobos, will be shown. The event will conclude at 4 p.m. with “Costa Rica 1975,” a documentary by Carlos M. Sáenz.

All screenings are free and open to the public and will take place at the Costa Rican Film Center, located on 11th Street, 9th Avenue, behind the National Insurance Institute.

Additionally, the National Dance Company will present an excerpt from its performance “La Novena” at 5 p.m., as part of the XVIII Intercampus Dance Festival, which will be held at the TEC Stage as part of Amón Cultural.
