One of the privileges of photography is being literally on the other side of the barrier, being able to experience the events for which others wake up early and even form lines ahead of those in the front row.
However, I believe one must know how to conduct oneself while there; the privilege and trust bestowed by event organizers must be repaid with a subtle presence, one that allows the spectators to enjoy the event without the photographer interfering.
I adore lenses with high zoom because they allow me to take advantage of distant subjects and even capture great photos without needing to be close. They are especially useful for nature shots and some excellent macros. Of course, as every photographer knows, there is no perfect lens; what is gained in distance is sometimes sacrificed in other parameters.
Anyway, I also learned to use a fixed 50mm lens… I think it is a challenging lens… I believe portraits are especially difficult… At events, I learned to switch lenses in seconds to seize any moment. Sometimes it’s also useful to have two cameras.
I insist that photographers should not be the center of attention at events; we should not overshadow the occasion. However, from time to time, things happen—like what happened to me in Cartago—and the truth is, these moments are a real joy.
