Community Innovation Lab Opens in Desamparados to Empower Local Projects

Fundación La Libertad launches a collaborative space for creation and problem-solving

The Fundación La Libertad has inaugurated a community innovation lab in the canton of Desamparados, aiming to strengthen local entrepreneurship, neighborhood collaboration, and creative solutions tailored to real community needs in the Greater Metropolitan Area. The space was officially presented on April 28, 2026, and is designed as a meeting point where citizens, local organizations, and development actors can co-create projects with social, economic, and environmental impact.

What is a community innovation lab?

A community innovation lab is a physical and collaborative environment where resources, methodologies, and knowledge are combined to design, prototype, and implement solutions to local challenges. These spaces encourage the participation of diverse actors — youth, entrepreneurs, community associations, educators, and institutional representatives — with the goal of:

• Identifying real community needs
• Designing value-driven proposals through participatory approaches
• Testing ideas through prototypes
• Building partnerships to scale initiatives

The lab in Desamparados seeks to become a hub that enables sustainable, people-centered, and replicable solutions, connecting local talent with innovation tools and support networks.

Expected impact on the community

Representatives from Fundación La Libertad emphasized that this type of infrastructure allows communities to:

Strengthen local capacities to plan and execute their own projects
Encourage entrepreneurship among youth and adults
Promote cooperation between public, private, and community actors
Develop solutions related to employment, education, mobility, and environmental challenges

The lab is intended to act as a catalyst for community-driven development in Desamparados, fostering collaborative learning and knowledge exchange that can translate into tangible benefits for residents.

Institutional collaboration and partnerships

Although the initiative is led by Fundación La Libertad, other institutions are expected to take part in the development and use of the lab. Potential collaborations include the Instituto Costarricense de Turismo and the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación, Tecnología y Telecomunicaciones (MICITT), as well as municipalities, academic institutions, and educational centers.

This cross-sector collaboration aims to make the lab not only a creative space, but also a bridge between citizens and public policy, encouraging initiatives aligned with local governance priorities.

The importance of community innovation

The focus on community-based innovation aligns with global trends that seek to transform social challenges into opportunities for positive impact through collaboration, continuous experimentation, and co-creation. These approaches emphasize citizen participation, empathy toward local realities, and the design of sustainable solutions adapted to each context.
