About Back to Our Roots at the National Museum
About Back to Our Roots: Celebration of Costa Rican Calypso Day at the National Museum On Sunday, May 17, the National Museum of Costa Rica will host the show “Back to Our Roots,” a concert dedicated to Costa Rican Calypso Day. The event will feature the National Band of Limón and the group Kawe Calypso, accompanied by the dance groups Dancestra (Limón) and Danzlim from the University of Costa Rica, Caribbean campus.
This will be a celebration of Afro–Costa Rican music and culture, especially from Limón, in honor of the birth anniversary of Walter “Gavitt” Ferguson, recognized as the king of Costa Rican calypso and a symbol of this genre, which has been declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Costa Rica.
