San José, September 10, 2025 – On World Suicide Prevention Day, Costa Rica’s Ministry of Health called on the entire population to help build a more supportive and compassionate society, where prevention is possible through collective action and mutual support.

This year’s international campaign is held under the theme “Changing the Narrative”, encouraging people to break the silence, eliminate stigma, and create safe spaces for open and honest conversations about suicide and mental health.

Actions and policies in Costa Rica In 2024, the country launched the National Mental Health Policy 2024–2034 and its action plan, along with the new Mental Health Regulation and Policy. It also introduced the INTE 1.2.3 standard, a guide for managing suicidal behavior in the workplace.

Preliminary data from the Ministry of Health shows that in 2024 there were 366 deaths by suicide (297 men and 69 women). By epidemiological week 33 of 2025 (August 10–16), there had been 2,493 suicide attempts, 1,619 by women and 874 by men.

WHO recommendations The World Health Organization promotes the LIVE LIFE strategy, which outlines four key actions to prevent suicide:

  • Limit access to lethal means to give time for crises to pass.
  • Promote responsible media coverage, including information on where to seek help.
  • Foster socio-emotional skills in adolescents to strengthen mental health and prevent risky behaviors.
  • Identify, assess, and follow up early with people at risk or who have attempted suicide.

A call to action The Ministry of Health emphasizes that if you suspect someone may be having suicidal thoughts, it is important to ask directly and offer a safe space for them to speak. This gesture, combined with support networks and professional help, can save lives.
