Exploring Costa Rica can become an even more interesting experience thanks to the Costa Rica Cultural Passport, an initiative by the Ministry of Culture and Youth (MCJ) that invites people to discover historical, heritage, and community sites across the country’s seven provinces.
The initiative brings together 35 destinations, five in each province, through seven cultural routes designed to introduce people to Costa Rica’s history, traditions, and cultural diversity.
A Cultural Journey Through the Seven Provinces
The passport encourages visitors to explore places that are part of the country’s identity, from museums and theaters to historical monuments, communities, and cultural centers.
Some of the destinations included are the National Museum of Costa Rica, the National Theatre, the Guayabo National Monument, the Ujarrás Ruins, Isla San Lucas National Park, and the Casa de la Cultura in Puerto Viejo, among many others.
Each province features five selected destinations, making it possible to plan trips across different regions and discover places that sometimes fall outside the usual tourist routes.
The initiative is intended for Costa Ricans as well as visitors interested in learning more about the country’s heritage.
How Does the Digital Cultural Passport Work?
The digital version of the Costa Rica Cultural Passport can be downloaded free of charge from the Ministry of Culture and Youth’s website.
Each person can use it as a guide to plan visits and explore the 35 proposed destinations.
At each location visited, participants can collect a stamp confirming their visit, with the goal of completing all seven cultural routes.
The project also includes a physical version of the passport, which incorporates Folio Mobile Chip (FMC) technology. By bringing a mobile phone close to the chip, users can access additional information about each destination, including its location, contact details, and a brief historical overview.
How Can You Get It for Free?
Getting the Cultural Passport is simple:
- Digital version: It can be downloaded free of charge from the official Ministry of Culture and Youth website: https://www.mcj.go.cr/enc26
- Physical version: Those who prefer a printed copy can complete the application form available on the same website. The Ministry will then get in touch to coordinate the place and date of collection.
An Invitation to Rediscover Costa Rica
Beyond collecting stamps, the Cultural Passport aims to promote domestic cultural tourism and bring people closer to the places that preserve the country’s historical memory.
The initiative, developed under the concept “La cultura que vivimos” (The Culture We Live), also offers an opportunity to discover different communities, explore their traditions, and appreciate the diversity that makes Costa Rica unique.
With 35 destinations spread across the country, the passport offers a new way to explore Costa Rica: travel, learn, and connect with the stories that are part of its identity.
