Stabilization of Slope on Route 32: Lane Control for Three Months

Table of Contents

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) began on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, the stabilization works of a slope at kilometer 27 of Route 32, in the Braulio Carrillo sector, which will result in lane control for at least three months. This main road between San José and Limón faces constant landslide risks, and the works seek to mitigate them in order to guarantee safety and traffic flow.

Start of the works

The interventions started on March 3 and take place from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., subject to favorable weather conditions. MOPT officially announced the start in its news section on March 4, highlighting the use of machinery on one lane with alternating traffic control. Staff and crews from the National Road Council (Conavi) coordinate with the Traffic Police to minimize impacts.

Stabilization techniques

Soil nailing with anchored bolts, shotcrete and drainage systems are being used to reinforce the slope and prevent water infiltration. These measures address one of four critical points (km 27, 28, 31 and 39) responsible for 80% of recent incidents. The estimated cost is ¢75 million, financed with the national road maintenance budget.

Effects on traffic

Road users should expect delays at km 27, with daily traffic regulations that avoid total closures but require planning. Route 32 recorded multiple closures in February, affecting freight and tourism traffic to Limón. People are encouraged to check updates on the MOPT website and mobility apps.

Long-term plan

MOPT plans sequential interventions on the four slopes through August 2026, including meshes and retaining structures to avoid road collapses. LiDAR studies support comprehensive designs, prioritizing the Caribbean region’s economic connectivity. These actions respond to long-standing demands for greater stability on this strategic route.
