Central Park Renovation
The intervention at Central Park includes increasing green areas, improving lighting, renewing the landscaping design, and modernizing existing infrastructure. The works are currently in the tendering process by the Municipality of San José and are expected to begin in the coming months, once the contract has been awarded. The project has been declared of public interest and has received the endorsement of the Historical-Architectural Heritage Unit, given the site’s symbolic and architectural value.
Main Works and New Spaces
Among the planned improvements are the installation of new urban furniture, the creation of an inclusive sensory garden, the construction of pergolas and roof coverings, and a complete overhaul of the lighting system. An automated irrigation system for the maintenance of green areas will also be installed, and intervention work will be carried out on the slab of the central kiosk. One of the most striking changes will be the opening of a café in the basement of the kiosk, with the idea of giving this heritage structure a permanent and dynamic use.
Objectives of the Intervention
According to the tender specifications, the objective is “to promote in Central Park a cooler, more sustainable, and environmentally friendly setting, as well as to strengthen safety and accessibility conditions for all users.” The Municipality of San José aims for the park to leave behind years of neglect and become a vibrant, safe, and attractive space for residents and visitors alike. The intervention forms part of a broader strategy for the improvement and recovery of public spaces in the city’s historic downtown area.
Vision of the Municipality of San José
Mayor Diego Miranda has noted that Central Park is “a jewel” of the capital and that investing in its beautification and modernization is essential. The opening of the café in the kiosk basement and the improvement of the urban environment are intended to ensure the space sees continuous use throughout the day and night, fostering a more active city. Miranda indicated that similar investments are also planned for Plaza de las Garantías Sociales and Plaza Víquez, as part of the same urban revitalization plan.
