All Insecticides Containing Fipronil Ordered Off the Market in Costa Rica

Public health measure to protect the population

Costa Rican authorities have ordered the withdrawal of all insecticides containing fipronil from the national market as a preventive action to protect public health and the environment. This decision follows technical findings and risk assessments indicating that this active ingredient may pose dangers if used improperly or if exposure occurs among children, pets, and wildlife.

The resolution was issued by the Ministry of Health of Costa Rica, through the Health Surveillance Directorate, in coordination with other relevant institutions, with the aim of minimizing potential adverse effects linked to this chemical compound.

What is fipronil and why is it a concern?

Fipronil is an active ingredient used in various household insecticides and pest control products, including formulations targeting ants, cockroaches, and other common insects. Although these products are legally sold, improper use or their presence in environments where vulnerable people and animals are present has raised concern among public health authorities and specialists.

According to assessments by international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), fipronil can negatively affect the nervous system of exposed organisms when used in high concentrations or without proper safety measures. For this reason, its use is strictly regulated in several countries.

Scope of the withdrawal: products and distribution

The sanitary measure establishes that all products formulated with fipronil must be removed from points of sale, including hardware stores, supermarkets, agricultural supply shops, and online platforms. Retailers must immediately stop selling these products and remove them from shelves while appropriate disposal procedures are arranged.

Distributors and brand representatives whose products contain this ingredient are also required to submit voluntary recall plans and inventory reports to the relevant authorities for proper management.

Potential risks and consumer protection

The withdrawal of fipronil products seeks to reduce potential risks arising from their use without adequate protective measures, particularly in enclosed spaces or near sensitive populations such as young children, pregnant women, and pets.

The Health Surveillance Directorate emphasized that this measure aims to ensure the safety of homes and the environment, reminding consumers that safer alternatives for household pest control are available, including physical methods and products with less hazardous ingredients.

Responsibilities of retailers and manufacturers

Entities responsible for distributing and selling insecticides containing fipronil must comply with the sanitary order issued by the Ministry of Health. This includes:

  • Stopping the sale of products containing fipronil
  • Removing existing stock from the market
  • Submitting a withdrawal and management report to authorities
  • Providing clear information to consumers about the discontinuation of these products and available alternatives

Comparison with international regulations

In other regions, such as the European Union and certain U.S. states, the use of fipronil is also subject to strict restrictions or bans in specific applications, particularly when human or domestic animal exposure is possible. These international precedents have served as references for Costa Rican authorities in adopting preventive health measures.
