San José on Screen: Free Costa Rican Film Series in the Capital

The Central Bank Museums of Costa Rica (Museos BCCR), together with the Municipality of San José, present “San José on Screen,” a free Costa Rican film series featuring six national feature films filmed entirely or partially in the capital between August 2026 and February 2027.

The initiative aims to bring these productions closer to local audiences and create a space for people to connect through Costa Rican cinema and San José’s urban heritage, using the city as the setting for everyday stories.

Schedule and Dates

Screenings take place monthly at 6:00 p.m. at the Museos BCCR, located beneath Plaza de la Cultura. Space is limited and advance registration is required.

• Thursday, August 20, 2026: I Have Electric Dreams (Tengo sueños eléctricos) by Valentina Maurel – A teenage girl tries to rebuild her relationship with her father while navigating the transition into adulthood.
• Thursday, September 17, 2026: Memories of a Burning Body (Memorias de un cuerpo que arde) by Antonella Sudasassi – Three women grew up during a time when sexuality was considered taboo. The film was selected to represent Costa Rica at the Oscars and the Goya Awards.
• Thursday, October 15, 2026: Medea by Alexandra Latishev – A young university student faces a hidden pregnancy while trying to maintain her everyday life.
• Friday, November 20, 2026: Unruly Helmets (Cascos indomables) by Neto Villalobos – The everyday life of a motorcycle courier navigating the streets of San José. The screening will take place as part of the Noche en Blanco event organized by Art City Tour.
• Thursday, January 28, 2027: Violeta at Last (Violeta al fin) by Hilda Hidalgo – A 72-year-old woman fights to preserve her independence and the home where she has lived all her life.
• Thursday, February 18, 2027: The Gazelle Dance (El baile de la gacela) by Iván Porras – A 72-year-old man pursues his dream of winning a tropical dance competition.
