Costa Rica Recognized as “Best Nature Destination” at the First Edition of the Forbes Travel Awards 2026

Recognition at the Forbes Travel Awards 2026

On March 17, 2026, at a gala held in Madrid, Spain, Forbes presented Costa Rica with the award for Best Nature Destination at the Forbes Travel Awards, one of the most influential editorial accolades in the tourism industry. The distinction places the country alongside other high-profile destinations honored in categories such as best international destination, best cultural destination, and best business destination. Costa Rica’s official representation at the ceremony was handled by Minister-Counselor Guisella Sánchez Castillo of the embassy in Spain.

Why Costa Rica Was Awarded

According to Forbes and the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT), among the key factors behind this recognition are that Costa Rica is home to approximately 6.5% of the world’s biodiversity and protects more than 25% of its territory through national parks and conservation areas. The editorial committee placed special value on the country’s sustainable tourism model, based on the combination of nature, conservation, innovation, and experiences that generate a positive and regenerative impact on local communities. Forbes highlighted the destination’s excellence in areas such as the quality of its natural surroundings, responsible resource management, and the international projection of the country brand Esencial Costa Rica.

Sustainable Tourism as a State Policy

The ICT recalled that Costa Rica has committed for decades to a sustainable tourism model, backed by instruments such as the Certificate of Sustainable Tourism (CST) and the promotion of businesses that incorporate responsible practices. In 2024 alone, 134 tourism companies were recognized by the ICT for their commitment to sustainability, reinforcing the coherence between environmental discourse and the sector’s day-to-day operations. For the authorities, the Forbes award confirms that this approach has allowed the country to succeed in the global tourism market without sacrificing its natural wealth.

Official Statements and International Projection

The Minister of Tourism, William Rodríguez, emphasized that the recognition is an invitation to “reinforce our sustainable tourism model” and continue offering experiences that allow visitors to “live what is truly essential” and reconnect with nature. The ICT celebrated the award as a reaffirmation of Costa Rica’s international leadership in responsible tourism, biodiversity, and wellbeing, stressing that it is an achievement for the entire sector. In Europe, the award coincides with a 9% growth in the arrival of European tourists by air during the first two months of 2026, further strengthening the country’s positioning in that market.
