San José, March 20, 2025 – The José Luis López Escarré Gallery, at the National Theater of Costa Rica, has opened the exhibition “Gusticos que duran 500 años” by Milena Somogyi.

This exhibition, which will be available until May 19, 2025, combines graphic design, photography, and satire. “The posters highlight the contradiction between what we aspire to be and what we really are; the paradox of a consumer society that, despite knowing it is unsustainable, continues with the same practices. Gusticos que duran 500 años is, therefore, an invitation to question whether the path we are following aligns with the world we desire,” said Milena Somogyi, the artist behind the exhibition.

“These works originated from my final project for the Digital Photography Technician program at the Costa Rica Institute of Technology in 2021. It was during the pandemic, and at that time, I ordered a lot of food delivery, which led me to accumulate a significant amount of plastic and reflect on my consumption habits and how plastic is present everywhere,” added Somogyi.

About the artist

Born in 1989 in San José, Costa Rica, Somogyi is a graphic designer graduated from the University of Costa Rica and a photographer trained at the Costa Rica Institute of Technology (TEC).

Her career spans from editorial projects, such as Casa Garabato and Revista Uchinché, to audiovisual projects like “Volviendo a la tierra que nos vio nacer” (2023), which documents the struggle for land recovery by the indigenous community of China Kichá. She is also recognized for her work as a designer, illustrator, photographer, and videographer at the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

A passionate cinephile and comic artist, she is the co-author of “Un Paseo”, which was selected among the 10 best comics in the Central American Comic Contest of the French Alliance in 2024.
