San José, September 23, 2024. The Ministry of Culture and Youth has opened the nomination period for the 2024 National Culture Awards, which will remain open until November 30, 2024.
These awards recognize the career achievements, hard work, perseverance, and excellence reached by individuals, artistic-cultural groups, popular performers, as well as community-based organizations, in various cultural disciplines.
The National Culture Awards are given in multiple categories of artistic production: music, dance, theater, visual arts, audiovisual arts, literature, journalism, among others. Additionally, there are lifetime achievement recognitions: the Magón National Culture Award, which honors a cultural career without discrimination of formats, genres, styles, or areas of disciplinary performance; and the Emilia Prieto National Award for Intangible Cultural Heritage.
In 2023, the National Award for Intangible Cultural Heritage was given to Rosa Álvarez (pictured on the right), “Jabanquijija,” a 59-year-old indigenous woman from the Maleku ethnicity of the Tongibe Palenque, in the canton of Guatuso.
In 2023, journalist Marjorie Ross González, who is also a poet, writer, food critic, and specialist in the history of food, as well as a doctor of education and lawyer specializing in human rights, received the Magón National Culture Award for 50 years of tireless multidisciplinary literary production.

We are currently in the nomination stage for the 2024 edition, which is an opportunity for all of us, as a society, to nominate those artists who deserve recognition for their career, research, or contributions to art and culture. I hope we take this opportunity to submit nominations so that we can have many proposals in the different categories. It’s a wonderful opportunity—let’s not miss it!” said Jorge Rodríguez Vives, Minister of Culture and Youth.
