San José, March 25, 2025. The Juan Santamaría Historical Cultural Museum, located in Alajuela, invites the public to enjoy the theatrical performance “Para vestir santos: Historias de Semana Santa”, a one-woman show that, through humor, seeks to encourage audiences to participate in Holy Week events within their own communities.
The play is a co-production between MHCJS and RA Producciones, featuring actress Xinia Vargas Sánchez in the role of “Chila.”
What does “quedarse para vestir santos” mean?
On the occasion of Holy Week celebrations, MHCJS presents this one-woman show that, through acting and oral storytelling, depicts the lives of those who devote themselves to working in the church—what is popularly referred to as having “stayed to dress saints.”
Thus, Doña “Chila,” an elderly woman and devoted volunteer at her parish, shares a series of stories and anecdotes from these celebrations and processions.
“Through this performance, we want to highlight that human figure, those women who did not get married and fully dedicated themselves to religious duties, taking on various tasks in a church. One of the most common is dressing the images of saints or preparing everything needed for the processions, especially during Holy Week. It’s a performance full of humor that will give the audience a great time and, most importantly, inspire them to take part in these Holy Week celebrations in a very special way,” said Xinia Vargas Sánchez, actress from Belén.
