San José, March 21, 2025. Teatro de la Aduana opens its doors to immerse the audience in the dynamics of a family coping with the neurodegenerative disease of Branko, a young man whose physical condition presents constant challenges; however, the real story lies in the internal conflicts, the love, the frustrations, and the hope that surround his loved ones.
This is the theatrical performance “My Son Walks Just a Little Slower”, presented under the direction of Gladys Alzate, performed by the company Garúa Teatro, in a play by Croatian playwright Ivor Martinić.
“Through a text filled with sensitivity, the staging reveals the complexity of human relationships, the struggle for acceptance, and resilience in the face of adversity,” reported the National Theater Company.
“Portraying Branko is a challenge in every sense. It’s about building a character who lives with a physical disability without falling into stereotypes, showing his humanity beyond his condition. It has led me to reflect on how we experience fragility and strength in everyday life, and how theater has the power to raise awareness about bodily and emotional diversity. I hope the audience can connect with the authenticity of this story and with Branko’s perspective on the world,” said actor Manfred Ramírez.
This play was first presented in 2024 during its initial season. Natalia Regidor, actress and one of the producers and founders of Garúa Teatro, mentioned: “Welcoming over 300 people in 2024 showed us that intimate theater continues to be a valid and necessary space in the national scene. That’s why we are excited to bring it back, with the same passion and commitment, for those who couldn’t see it and those who wish to relive this theatrical experience.”
